Dealing With the Downside of Retirement
I know that it may be hard to believe that there is a downside to retirement, but there is for many. Retirement can sound heavenly when we’re stressed at work or feeling like we have no free time for anything but work and chores but being faced with years with no job to go to really can cause some to feel down. Let’s face it, we’re creatures of habit and if you’ve been in the habit of getting up, getting dressed and going to work for the last 40+ years it can be very hard to make the adjustment to a life of leisure all of a sudden.
Dealing with the downside of retirement isn’t only limited to getting used to having all kinds of free time though. Another downside is having to adjust to living on a smaller income. For some who are privileged enough to have a good retirement savings plan in place the difference isn’t much, but for others it can mean the difference between being comfortable and living in poverty. Another common complaint when it comes to retirement is feeling as though you’re reaching the end of a chapter of your life—even the end of your life! Retirement is definitely a time of adjustment and most don’t handle that much adjustment at once very well.
To make things a little easier you’ll need to tweak your thinking a tad. You need to start seeing retirement not as the end of your life but rather a new beginning. The free time that retirement brings means being able to do things that you never had the time to before. For those who can afford it, that could mean travelling the world and for others it can be as simple as finally being able to spend more time with your loved ones and have lunch with the friends who you never had time to see while you were employed. It can mean being able to finally do something about your garden or start journaling—whatever brings you joy.
If money is going to be an issue during your retirement then you may want to work part time. You can go back to your job for a few hours or look for something new and exciting. If you have a hobby that you can make money at, such as card making, crafts, carpentry or even writing, then why not set up a little home business doing what you love? You can sell your crafts on eBay or at local craft sales. There are plenty of options available to you if you’re willing to look for them and put some time into them. And in retirement, that is one thing that you do finally have to spare!
Retirement isn’t something to dread but rather to celebrate and milk for all it’s worth and the sooner you can begin to see it that way, the sooner you’re be able to start really enjoying your life to the fullest.
