What Will I Do After I Retire?

As appealing as laying about in your stretchy pants and robe all day may sound, realistically that can get real boring real fast. Retirement should be about relaxing, but how much relaxing can one person handle day in, day out? The truth is that many people find retirement to be harder than they expected and not having a job to go to proves very depressing for some. So what does one do to fill their days after they retire? This article explores a couple of possible suggestions that may help.

WORK
Yes, that’s right—I’m suggesting you work after retirement! Many people go back to work after retirement for various reasons. For some, going back to their old job part time is a way to pass the time and for others it’s more about the money and needing to earn some extra money on top of their retirement savings and benefits. Then there are those that decide that now is the time to try something new and take on a job completely different from anything that they’ve ever done. Getting into a new field when you’re over 55 isn’t always easy, but with perseverance and a good resume anything’s possible. Having a few good contacts doesn’t hurt either!

VOLUNTEER
When we’ve got jobs to go to, kids to raise and all kinds of other commitments it’s hard to be able to set aside any time to do something like volunteer, but once you’re retired it’s another story. If you don’t need to make extra money for your retirement then volunteering is a great way to pass time as well as do something meaningful. Consider your favorite charities and ways you can help out, like walking dogs at the local shelter or volunteering at a hospital. If you’re looking for something different then what about volunteering at the airport’s travel services booth? Many are run by volunteers. Think about businesses and charities that you’re passionate about and inquire within them as to what volunteer opportunities may exist.

TRAVEL
Retirement is a great time to get out and see the world. Not only do you finally have the time off to travel but you’re also finally old enough to get all the senior’s discounts! Take advantage of vacation packages that cater to seniors because you often get quite a bit of value for your dollar. If flying and cruises aren’t your thing then what about taking to the open road and exploring the country in an RV? Or you could go camping for a week, take a couple days to go fishing someplace or jet off to New York for a romantic weekend with your partner. The options are endless when it comes to traveling during retirement. Do your research, score the best deals and don’t forget to ask for your discount! Money saved means more vacations!

These are just some of the things that you can do after retirement. With a little crafty thinking you no longer need to wonder, what will I do after I retire? There are lots of things to do if you’re willing.
